This was a digital artwork that took quite a while, I spent 18 hours turning my beetle furry, then by the time I’d completed that, I’d photographed some pumpkins and decided to use them there and recolour the pumpkins. I feel like I didn’t exist tot fully utilise the fur I spent so long on, but I like how the artwork turned out.

I'm embarking on a project to print my darts (digital artworks) in-house. tl;dr to get there I want to offer pre-order prints and below are the aspects of this project so you know what you're buying.
Lore:
The darts were previously printed on this beautiful pearlescent photo paper but I had to discontinue it because I'm quite the butter fingers and ended up ruining about half before I managed to post them. The profit margin also sat at about $20 each. From there I decided to increase the quality and sell more durable prints which became sublimated metal prints and drove the price up from $50 to $370. I instantly noticed a drop in sales so I can confirm the price is a pain point for the art lovers.
Since sales dropped dramatically the digital artworks became more focused towards my colouring in book series and I didn't keep up with the cost of production. A recent sale has now exposed the fact that I'm no longer making 40% of the profits but just 10%, before postage costs. So if you spend $1800AUD including postage (to Florida as an example), I only earn $130, but I still do all the leg work of travelling to Sydney to pickup the print, packing and posting it to you.
Solution:
Since then I've been researching how to print the files in-house so I can save on production costs. To do this I need to collect about $15,500 in order to purchase two machines, the blanks, the frames and consumables as well as have a seperate circuit wired up here for the machines. I've buffered how much I need for each section by increasing the total a tad so I don't undercut my budget.
The machines:
- A heat press: I've chosen a 60cm x 100cm sized heat press due to costs for larger machines becoming exponentially higher. I have found one press that is 100cm x 120cm that is great however this requires three phase and also increases the cost of the electrician as I'll need a different meter and electricity consumption. I'll be looking at this option when my business progresses. Postage may land at about $500 judging by how expensive my artworks may be to post.
- Printer: I require a special sublimation printer with specific ink and I've narrowed my search down to two printers. I'm likely to order the $10,000 Mutoh printer because I like Brother as a printing company, trust their printers and they partner with Mutoh. This is also the most budget friendly printer available in the size I need. There is a second Epson option which costs $14,000 and Epson is known to do sublimation well so if my budget expands Ii'll consider this option. For now I'm going to the Mutoh printer. Postage may land at about a thousand judging by how expensive my artworks are to post.

This is one of the final artworks of both my twenty-one artworks in twenty-one days which then turned into eight artworks in eight hours so this was a time crunch. I wanted to recreate the concepts of ‘Doughnut Town’ and ‘Ice cream Town’ but with a snake and while reflecting on my previous artworks I noticed I hadn’t actually used this snake in it’s original size that I made for the ‘Spring Hood’ digital artwork. So this is the final result of those ideas mashed together.

Before this artwork I made an artwork ‘Hippy Bust’ which was built of a much older artwork. With the same idea here, I wanted to return to my much older digital artworks, around 2018, and recreate them the way I would today. A while back I visited the Art Gallery of NSW and there was an artwork, photography, where an aboriginal man duplicated himself at Parliament which showed how things would look if white people didn’t run the town here. I liked it on all aspects and that’s where the idea to replicate the lemur came from. I also recently cleaned it up and wanted to use the photo.

Recently I made twenty-one artworks in twenty-one days and on the final day I needed to create seven digital artworks in seven hours, then I added one more because I rage quit on a painting and this is that final one. It was pretty early the next day (still counts as the previous day though!) so I only spent 35 minutes on this. I went in with the idea to make a car sandwich of cloud buns. It’s pretty tough making art at 5am so I couldn’t make it very complicated. I also wanted to make the sky red… A while back I was asked to make a painting with a red sky, and I did and every now and then I think about how a red sky could be used and work. This now makes it eight artworks in seven and a half hours.

In 2018 I took a photograph of my bike at Bobbin Head and manipulated it to look as it does, ‘Bike Bobbin’. I wanted to recreate the artwork but change it to have two bikes crashing in the air, perhaps use the bikes from ‘Motorcloud’ and ‘Cloudcycle’. Instead I didn’t as I decided to complete 7 artworks in 7 hours, which soon became 8 artworks in 8 hours and this was the result. A tad rushed.

This is an artwork I thought up while creating the previous digital artwork where I’d use a tool in Photoshop to smudge the colours of all the layers and add saturation to create a 60’s style colour mess. Now that I’m using Affinity Photo I needed to recreate this but without the tool but figure out how to make the pixels do that myself. This was successful and that’s the pattern you see behind the zebra stripes. Alongside that I wanted to add a wild mane and coffee pouring in a really straight fashion. The artwork turned out very close to what I imagined, goal accomplished!

When creating this artwork I decided I wanted to make some thug birds. This is them. My friend has an inside joke where she calls all cockatoo’s ‘Collin’ following a story where she had a baby the same time as some resident cockatoos. Every time I hear the name though I think of a lad. So this title felt fitting.

During an adventure to the PIX exhibition I saw a photograph of a car, I’m not sure if the tyres were white walls or actually glowing, it’s a black and white photo I only briefly looked at but I liked the idea. So I began working on a digital artwork where the tyres would glow and that’s the only goal. This artwork ended up going through a couple transformations and it may be worth watching the making of it.

This kitten in this artwork is a photo I took of a kitten I once fostered and named ‘Trump’. Lately I’ve wanted to use photos from older artworks and fix them up so I can re-use the item in new artworks. For this one I took Trump from my artwork, ‘Trump Blanket’ and really like the concept of that artwork but it’s hard to top. Instead this is the outcome, I still wanted to create something surreal and instead of putting her in bubbles I decided to have a go at creating an hourglass.

I’ve joined the masses turning their backs on Adobe and this is my first digital artwork using Affinity Photo. This was mainly a learning curve and I’m not sure it’s my best concept but a good start to hopefully some great Affinity made artworks! I wanted to create an electric wall by using textures that I’d create in Photoshop like smudging and adjustment layer or placing a glow around it. I ended up making the vines glow and even created a much better lemur (in terms of fur) than I could have in Photoshop. The overall intention was to create a window where the clouds are actually doughnuts, so I tried to show that with some of them spanning across to the neighbouring window. I also added the albino giraffes referencing my painting, ‘The Game’, while the doughnuts reference my painting, ‘Cravings’.

After my previous digital artwork, ‘Coffee on the Table’, I wanted to continue the trend of a very realistic setting however I’ve also taken on quite a few projects at the moment and am short of new background photos. So I decided to use my trusty Royal National Park photo for this one. I challenged myself by using much less saturated colours than usual and editing the landscape just a little bit as well. In general I wanted to use my bicycle from ‘Messy Bicycle’ and put it into this new style. In the end I’m pretty pleased with it but want to try different tactics with a photo background I’ve taken. I also felt like throwing in the regular protagonists from my other artworks.

I’m in the mood to switch up my style just a little bit for a while. When I began manipulating photos they had a very realistic look as I didn’t change the background, I decided to return to that approach although with the idea in mind that I want to bring the cleaned up edited objects from my more recent artworks and merge the two styles. I’ve been looking around my place imagining the objects that have been in my digital artworks so that’s where this idea came from, I also really enjoy my ‘Astrology Cup’ artwork so I worked from there.

I didn’t start this artwork with a goal in mind but wanted to create a turtle version of my ‘Bicycle Bridge’ where a turtle is stuck between two somewhat cliff edges. The image of the turtle doesn’t really fill the page so I changed my mind to creating a curvy wave that’s blowing bubbles and have the turtles climb across it. That idea didn’t last long and I ended up with clouds inside some bubbles and a hoop with an ordinary world in it, like the clouds in the bubbles are different universes. The videos on this artwork would be interesting to see unfold just based on how many times I changed my mind.

I have a pretty comprehensive portfolio of giraffe artworks but when I finished my ‘Doughsplosion’ artwork I decided I genuinely needs a giraffe version. I’m also quite sure that I came to that idea from the ‘Raffepopper’ artwork so it looks like I’m doing an idea spiral here. This is an artwork I thought up while colouring in a doughnut page in my colouring in book series and decided I want to make a doughnut with loads of tiny giraffe sprinkles. From there I wanted to create an artwork where some of the main object is cut out, like a mid shot. As I created the doughnut I wanted a new doughnut since I’ve used it so much and rendered up a new one then when importing it into Photoshop from Blender I couldn’t decide what colour to make it, then I ended up wanting to make it look electric, like my ‘Hippy Hippo’ artwork. I really like that one, it’s simple but so complicated simultaneously, so I recreated it with the Beetle. While creating it I decided on a new idea, somewhat inspired by my ‘Raffe Popper’, but different and include the springs I’d just created using Blender. This is a continuation from my ‘Springhood’ artwork where I created a pear that’s a spring shape but also melts like icing. This time I wanted it to be the centrepiece and make it conceptual. While I created it I decided that it was such an interesting shape I wanted to hide it behind a bird. Playing with the idea that a bird really would get in the way of a view in real like, especially cockatoos, and adding to the mystery of what’s behind the bird.

While colouring in the ‘Car Lessons’ page in the Paintings 2022 edition of my colouring in book series I decided to create a digital artwork where I showed a car unravelling like it does in the artwork that’s shown the colouring in book. The artwork didn’t go to plan after executing the car slinky so I changed the scene to include an ice cream statue with a ladder on it. After that I wanted to include more so it felt busy. Less staged.

I recently created an artwork, ‘Smokey Bird’, which is what sparked the idea. Since birds fly around so quick I wanted to create an artwork with heaps of birds shooting around the page. This is a digital artwork I first created after my 80 artworks project had wrapped up and I now have a new approach to make artworks far more intricate than before. I sparked up an idea to create a cloud exploding cartons of milk, as I created the artwork it then changed as it came to fruition. I wanted to leave the artwork having created something using a photo I hadn’t used in a while, so instead of the milk, I ended up using the turtle. This is the final digital artwork of my 80 artworks project! So I decided to create a giraffe as a party popper. This idea was sparked by my ‘Doughnut Town’ and in the future I continue these tiny things in digital artworks. This is still my favourite of them.

I decided to create this artwork during my 80 artworks challenge and in my surroundings sat my painting ‘Watching the Boats Sail Past’ which shows a bunch of boats which are doughnuts. I’ve tried plenty of times in the past to either paint a digital artwork or digitally create a painting and they never work out, the two genres are different. So here I am trying again! This ended up entirely different yet they both look good enough for me to feature though doughnut boats again. They still don’t cross over, I just now have two entirely different styles of doughbots, I’m not sure if this is the most successful attempt to cross over the genres either. The final artwork reminds me of a video game and the boss is a moon. Check out the art venture video of this one, there’s more documented on the making there.

I have an older artwork, ’Couchmellow’ that I felt like returning to now that I cleaned up the photo of my couch for the previous artwork ‘Elephant Moving Home’. I liked how in ‘Couchmellow’ I changed the colours of each cushion. The artwork also slightly draws the burning couch from ‘Couch Tree’. Alongside inserting what came to mind when creating the artwork. I included the tiny flying cars from various previous artworks and wanted to turn the couch into a bicycle just for the sake of it.

This is an artwork I created during my 80 artworks and the idea came from two previous ideas. One being ‘Alpaca Wall’ and the other ‘Camouflage Partyraffant’. I’ve always appreciated the transparency of the wall in ‘Camouflage Partyraffant’ and tried to replicate it quite a few times. While creating the artwork I wanted to channel some dreamy vibes, the window’s calling.

This is one of my 80 artworks and when I began it I thought I’d quickly wrap the bird in leaves although that wasn’t quick and it didn’t look good (I recommend watching the time lapse for this one) I then changed my mind on what I wanted to create and at the time I thought the concept of turning the bird into half smoke would be too simple. After creating it I decided this artwork took a very good turn.

This is the artwork I made just before the one I released the week before this one, I chose to share them in reverse order since this ones a tad more cryptic to understand what you’re looking at, not having seen the other first. While I worked on my 80 artworks I looked around at other peoples art and saw how people used clouds as part of their objects. Something I’ve done before (‘Ice Cream Town’ as an example) but I haven’t turned the motorbike into one which means it’s time to do so! I then created the other because I thought it should be done.

This is a digital artwork from my 80 challenge and I wanted to incorporate the photo of a milk carton I had which I only used once in the other ‘Malk’ artwork. This time I cleaned up the photo so it didn’t look so generic and from there the artwork became different flavoured milk… I could have done blueberry and food flavours although as a surrealist I didn’t go that way. I decided to create this artwork as cockatoos sometimes visit me and genuinely watch me colour in… I like to think they know they’re in some of my artworks. I tend to have a coffee when colouring in (I have a colouring in book series you should check out) so this artwork is coffee with the birds. Something I’m not doing intentionally is when I’m given instructions I tend to take the instructions as is but give it a creative twist. So if you wanted me to give you an image of coffee with birds, this is what you get.

This idea came to mind after creating my artwork ‘Road Trip’ and decided instead of having one low lying clouds I wanted many. As the artwork unfolded it became what it is now. I really enjoy this artwork as it really shows off the kind of surrealism I want to share.
