I hate commissions. I feel like a puppet when people ask for them, they always want something I’ve already created and usually available but they want to tweak it. I made one for a woman who promised she’d let me create an artwork, then didn’t, she turned it into a design and didn’t understand that paint doesn’t work like photoshop. I’m really disappointed in the outcome due to her changes. I should have left the artwork and told her to take it or leave it. That’s my perspective. Working off that, this artwork is the representation of a commission. I painted ‘The Nightmare’ by Henry Fuseli, on on side and ‘Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat’ by Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, framed next to a pair of scissors. The portrait artwork references how the person requesting the commission only wants to show off that a particular artist created it, it’s cut from the canvas of ‘The Nightmare’ because they’re picking and choosing what parts from the masterpiece they want to keep and then making changes. This is why I believe a commission isn’t art and I won’t be a puppet of talent for you. You are not an artist, if you are, do it yourself. Below I painted red dripping from the scissors which comes from the red cloth of ‘The Nightmare’ then the hand of the artist barely hanging on to a thread from the Self-Portrait…’. I had this idea in mind for a while, being a big fan of 80’s rock I noticed when 90’s rock is suggested in my playlists there’s no piano solos (concerto’s) and it makes a difference. I find rock more grunge without the piano, it’s disappointing to imagine some of the hits without the piano. Previously having created my artworks ‘The Decomposed Musician’ about the death of the musician as a regular career and ‘Cello’ being the artwork before that, this follows the mini series. I painted the piano rotting like a pear and the previous artworks, and a hand closing the lid then it’s blood drips into the piano’s final red carpet. The piano is attacked and falling apart. The white flag grows out of the dead leaves and out the window to join the previously fallen contributions to music as time passed. In this artwork I play with psychology and gentrification. As I opened Saatchiart to upload one of my artworks another “artwork” caught my attention. This was priced at $20K+, so I clicked onto the artwork to see what majestic concept the “artist” aimed to channel. None. The listing literally said ‘décor’. I’m offended. So offended turned my offence into an artwork. ‘Simulation theory’ then kicks in and I happened to stumble across a massive canvas to repurpose for this concept. I decided to genuinely show off my talent in this piece although price it stupidly high on the online galleries and have no description, to give the impression it’s décor. I’m assuming the gallery will place it in a nice position since they’ll make a huge commission, I aim for the viewers to question the price. Leading them to see my other artworks and seeing a huge discrepancy. I wonder if the viewers will then look up my name and see this description on my own website to see I’m mocking the gentrification of décor artists and have a real description and appropriate price here (according to my level of fame). The game here is if someone ends up buying it direct, they win the game… If they go through a gallery without finding the true meaning of the artwork, I win the game. I risk being kicked off the online galleries with this artwork although that’s part of the statement I’m making. I tried painting this in 9 days although finished it in ten, because of the timeline I gave myself there’s definitely some tiny parts where I could have calculated the paint drying better so there are a few touch-ups which don’t reflect my aim to entirely show off my talent… The items in the artwork aren’t meant to have meaning however I definitely painted it with a story in mind, that’s just the way it worked out. This year I'm more against consumerism than usual, my new years resolution is to save as many items from council cleanup as bags of rubbish I throw out. Since then I've realised that most of my trash is actually re-usable in some form (compost, local scrap metal, recycling centre). Which then translated to preferring second hand items and watching how people shop as a hobby. I painted the taps to represent the unlimited amount of items someone can buy and decided to create the first tap a human statue tap but painted the man upset and bombarded by the other taps. I recently had to update my website and all my digital artworks into metal prints which meant hours of looking at my artworks then when moving onto another activity it felt like I'd left another world so I painted the feeling. The wall print is a background of a self portrait I created many years ago and I have a theme of pears so I kept them in, I also low-key painted the door missing. Everyday I eat pancakes and in general pretty much drink honey. One day the light hit the honey jar and decided to paint it. Since I pretty much drink it I decided to paint the honey in a fluid manner taking over the fruit around it. This artwork is representative of how people spend their money, I find that majority of people my age (I was roughly mid-20’s, millennial) use loans as their savings account instead of actually saving, their money tree would be a tap straight down into the ground and this is how I wanted to paint that. That's why I split up the rhino into three sections and under water, being out of its element.
