Pausing to Contemplate Over Coffee

This is an artwork I decided to paint when something didn’t go as planned so I sat on the balcony with my coffee contemplating it. Then I thought about all the times I’ve sat there with my coffee thinking something through. So that’s the birth of this concept, all the coffee’s you’ve had just sitting around thinking deeply. I also wanted to show movement and a little chaos around the subject and feel like I achieved it with this one. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.
Wedding Portrait Practice 2 Acrylic Painting

I recently saw a TikTok video of what people considered a really shit wedding portrait. This is news to me that artists are hired for an extraordinary amount to paint live! I thought I’d kick ass at this and want to get in on it so I began busking to practice in front of people. If you watch the time-lapse on my time-lapse YouTube you’ll see I do the first two hours live, there’s a two hour limit on site. Since this is practice I’m just selling it cheap. It’s the second of the five and sold on site! Acrylic on cardboard and sold with a certificate of authenticity.

Everyone probably agrees that there’s a rise in mental disorders alongside technology. Every now and then I meet someone who brandishes their diagnosis collection like medals, then go a step further and tell me what I am… Plot twist, I’m nothing, I’m a perfectly healthy young woman and that opinion needs to step right back to where it came from, it’s inappropriate behaviour. What I’ve understood so far… These people are using articles that show up on their first page of a, potentially bias, Google search which include phrases like “13 reasons you’re”. Or YouTube videos of someone who did that for them. These aren’t thousand page studies, or books written by psychologists but more and more people walk around as if that’s what they’re equipped with. I found one of these people particularly jarring when they had to be correct, so I questioned it and ended up with this artwork. I began painting this artwork as a man then it ended up being a woman because of paint logistics (check out the video on that one), but the concept overall was to paint books as eye lasers. As if the person who’s shooting out diagnosis’ is using their new found opinion as lasers out to get you. I painted the lasers as books since there’s no actual books going on here. If I were being socially confronted with someone who read studies I’d have taken a different approach and painted someone throwing books, so that’s where the laser books idea comes from, empty, like the weight of the opinions being thrown at me. Underneath I left the ground bare from grass since it really felt like these interactions needed to leave the person correct at all costs, no friendship will be left behind if they’re wrong, no life for anything new to grow. I also tried painting the head as a huge statue in the distance being held up by the tree, I’m not sure I hit the mark though. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

I read a book shortly before painting this painting, ‘Genius, The Natural History of creativity by Hans Eysenck’ and on page 127 I read this line; “Genius is only found in males (for whatever reason!). Illustrations abound. In the list of geniuses studied by Cox, (1926) there are no women.” Let’s take note of the somewhat surprise from Eysenck as if he alludes to the reason actually being gender. So I’ll take a moment to elaborate the times. Women only won women’s rights in the 60’s and I doubt it was an easy road after that, sexism is still evident deep within culture so I don’t see women in the 60’s suddenly being accepted into jobs automatically without prejudice. The book itself points out that the definition of genius requires eminence in the field of your career. Women weren’t allowed careers so there you go, mystery solved. Even though another 60 years has passed we need to take into account that’s just your grandmother, or mothers generation who fought for equal rights and I bet there were some too busy raising young children to take it seriously. So you have your generation to be the first without prejudice in obtaining a job and on your way to the definition of genius. I personally argue it’s not a fresh start as in male dominated careers women report others having the opinion they won the job just please the stats and don’t receive the same respect amongst colleagues. As I read on it seemed as if the women who were eminent such as Marie Curie or Emily Dickinson must have just been considered very good. So the prejudice doesn’t just lie in not being able to find avenues to become eminent, but then being recognised as eminent. Following that thought I decided to whip out a female Einstein. She wears his jacket and the buttons lie the way a woman’s jacket does. That subtitle on page 127 named “Gender”, seems to have a misprint as I read “Prejudice in gender”. One day I was colouring in my colouring in book and felt an ant crawling on my hand, I then looked again and it was gone. You could say it jumped off or something, but I went down a thought trail and wondered if the ant was ever there in the first place? I had just read a book, ‘Genius, The Natural History of Creativity’ by H. J. Eysenck which explains that studies show more creative people tend to sit closer on the scale to psychosis. So wondering whether I’m immune to this trend was on my mind, if I am, am I not even that creative? Is the creativity a hallucination too? I continued the thought alongside this fresh new insight on psychology, it’s possible I imagined the ant… It’s possible I’m imagining everything around me. You could be insane and never know it. I shared the thought with a friend, she added we might not even be friends and either of us could be sitting there alone talking to ourselves. Then you add the reality that reality is just warped to your perspective and what you engage with. So if nothing’s real, then everything’s real and there’s no such thing as anything. From there I decided to paint the ants. I painted my hand but they’ve opened up a rabbit hole for me so I painted holes in the hands where birds fly in and out, like the birds in my artworks. I decided nothing’s real so the table turns into an ocean and some boats seem to be on struggle street knocked over. Then you’ll see that turns into a wave of water and travels into the distance. I tried making the room warp at the edges and the clouds sit as a pendant inside. The birds on the window are a reference to my digital artwork ‘Cockatoo’s at My Window’ This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

This is the first artworks I painted after my 80 artworks in 79 days. After that challenge I had a new way of managing my time which allowed me to focus on the details of my artworks more than before. The idea is to create an artwork purely based on imagination instead of making a point. I also wanted to paint an artwork that I couldn't easily do with a computer. I began this artwork as a challenge to create a painting similar to my digital artworks as my digital artworks have a different style to my paintings. I've tried this many times and it's something I haven't mastered. This one however turned out much better. I believe there are aspects here that I couldn't have done with a computer, as my brother once said "you can do anything with paint, but you can't on a computer". I find this to be true. I love these spiky waters I first created in my painting, 'Devils Lake', and want to make more. This time without a harsh context but an unknown substance as the topic. From there I intended to paint the rabbits floating out of the spikes in bubbles. This probably didn't convey. Rabbits because the 80 artworks felt like a total 11 week long rabbit hole! I intentionally wanted to paint horses in positions you wont be able to photograph, then merging into the fabric of the boat where a face hides (the head of your imagination) and the boat travels through dropping fabric that resemble limbs of the statues I painted in the past. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.
Atheists Make the Universe Cry

I’m minding my own business a lot of the time. This guy who wasn’t felt like stirring the pot so I made an artwork with the following thought. My Bumble account clearly displays that I’m interested in astrology, it eloquently counteracts the motorbike so the guys interested for the wrong reasons tend to be scared off by the astrology. A guy one day thought he’d take that into account and begin arguing at me… At. He sent photos intended to offend any religion but he didn’t understand that astrology isn’t a religion. So it felt like arguing with an idiot since he had no idea what he was so against, repeatedly emphasising he’s an atheist. After that I really wondered, why are these atheists so insistent on converting people with beliefs, they’re trying to use reason but faith isn’t based on reason… It’s purely belief so you can’t argue with science. The thought then continues to where you see this artwork, people who truely believe in something have a sense of everything being fine, and just a bit rocky on the way. I feel like I can blindly follow my gut knowing my career will work out because I believe the universe has my back. So how are these people living their lives if they don’t have any faith that they’re here for a reason. I painted a brick path leading into a ditch, behind it a rose coloured glass wall where the people who do believe make the leap and land. Tear drops are scattered everywhere around the landscape, the universe is crying. I also believe that it’s important to be kind since we’re a communal species and literally work together to continue living. If someone’s going around mindlessly attacking others, intending to shatter their sense of purpose the world is affected through a chain reaction. So this is the atheists making the universe cry. This artwork isn't one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

I was listening to a video about Magritte one day and the narrator dropped the comment that surrealists tend to be interested in psychology. I agree with that, I’m a surrealist and I find it fascinating how people act, not in a pop-psychology-internet-article kind of way, in a way that I’ll borrow books that are referenced in uni degree’s and understand you can’t just go around diagnosing people. Time is limited for this activity though. A few years back, around 26, I learnt that creativity is the brain making connections between parts of the brain. Where other people who aren’t creative don’t make those connections. Until I learnt that I genuinely believed people were being lazy when they’d say things like “How do you think of that?”… In my mind, you just stop and think for two seconds, get a grip. Then I continued on and learnt about synesthesia and have a personal theory that’s just intense creativity. All very interesting. Then that comes to the art, just an extension of how I think and representative of how I see things. So here I painted my thoughts and ideas falling through the roof of my mind and entering the real world. The items that represent my ideas then begin to die, “How high are you?”, “It’s so abstract!”. There’s also a reference to a digital artwork I created. Some hands reach out wanting to share the ideas. People don’t tend to look at the artwork and guess what I’m conveying with it, of coarse! That would be quite a party trick, like reading my mind. But the wonderful thing about art is that everyone sees something individual in each artwork and they personalise it. It becomes a lovely plot twist that the artworks enter the real world to die, then rebirth in a new way for each individual. I find it so interesting that people break down historic artists artworks and label what they were thinking, without descriptions you just don’t know… Bosch. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

This is an artwork I decided to paint after a break up, I don’t do those often so it definitely came as a refresher. I found it interesting insight, especially for people who get into relationships often… How are they keeping their emotions in check and willingly diving straight back into a relationship? I really worked on making sure to keep the appropriate emotion for whatever situation. In the painting I originally knew I wanted to paint a set of cubes, compartments, and definitely including a woman letting the water pour over while the one in the box below is bothered by her arm flopping down and holding a lighter to it. Instead I changed it to have no props in most of the boxes (check out the time-lapse and artventure videos to see the progress of this). They’re all in their boxes, however the nature of some emotions naturally intervenes with whatever their neighbours up to. Since I began my 80 artworks project shortly after starting this, I included it and the detail in this artwork definitely made the project more difficult! The close up is of the best face… This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

During my 80 artworks challenge I thought about painting this when pausing to look for inspiration for a digital artwork. I wasn’t inspired by anything the other artists were doing, however I did notice something very sad. One popular artist made a few skits where she aimed to be comical and barely showed the artwork. Another wrote “I’ll show you this painting every day until I sell 100 prints” as he did a manly twirl and bopped around with the artwork. First, don’t sell prints. I’m firmly against prints of paintings. Second… Why would anyone buy that (to give description it were a white Chewbacca looking animal, and well executed). Art isn’t just a pretty picture and no matter how much you dance around or make skits, you’re not giving people a reason to buy the artwork. Neither of these “artists” gave any insight as to why they created it except décor. This really grinded my gears, and once again (like my artwork ‘Call for Shitty Artists’) I’m deeply disappointed to be in the same category. These people are putting minimal effort into the “artworks” and maximum effort into making themselves look good for the social attention. I’m looking forward to the day they give up on calling themselves artists and go with influencer or comic. On the left of this painting is another artist propping himself up in the same water’s I swim in, only he’s using his artworks to prop himself up, stay dry, and not get his hands dirty. On the right is me swimming, trying to keep my artwork out of the water. The artwork is what people need to see, not the artist. This artwork had it’s struggles as I think this might have been the round where I aimed to make either 12 or 14 artworks in that week. Time vs skill came into play here. I do document my art process on a few YouTubes and Patreon but it’s entirely different and unscripted… Kind of like an actual documentation, you know, the 90’s definition. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

There’s an artwork I made and sold, still my favourite, named ‘Trauma’. Before making this painting I remembered a neighbour visiting my place and he went up to the painting in awe (because they’re all better in real life) and said “It’s so abstract!” I’m not an abstract artist, in any regard. Funny and annoying statement, it’s a compliment but not if you have reservations about abstract art the way I do. This artwork grabbed the attention of people in the room, goal achieved, and still trying to do the same with other artworks. So I painted the presence of that artwork in this one, a cactus in the middle of the room, while everyones going about their day but it still fills the room. Art enthusiasts, plant people… some people get it. There’s something special about inanimate objects. I continue on this thought in a different painting about painting vs moving image. While creating it I also tried to capture a new type of scene as opposed to the desert scene I like to do, I glanced upon ’By Lamplight’ by Harriet Backer which I really appreciated and tried something indoors with light peering through. This artwork has references to a couple other artworks in it. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

A while back I felt sad and since the universe dumped an excessive amount of talent this way, I decided to paint a portrait of my sadness to make other people feel sad when they stop and watch the artwork. This isn’t a self portrait. Since a smile is contagious, so is everything else. I added a severed hand, the idea originally spawned from a recently sold artwork ‘The Decomposed Musician’ then I decided it’s representative of the memories that keep their grip. Floating fruit in the background representing my art goals as unfocused 3D glasses since being sad makes it hard to focus on them. Birds stuck in the wall, unlike all my other bird artworks where they fly freely and a frame around her head as women are strongly influenced to keep from confronting issues and sit pretty, until it’s too late to communicate. With the hand holding the frame in place and the vines pulling it back slightly. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

This is an artwork I decided to create after wondering about fortune tellers and how they end up becoming one. I knew a woman who seemingly decided to become one one day, she wasn’t the most honest person so I genuinely questioned her motives. Others have their own paths, so I painted a fortune teller at an empty fair in her hut. Behind her the hut continues to stretch into the blurry distance, underneath I painted symbols of life events that could have led her to this career, they can be interpreted as the viewer wishes, although I wanted to include items that symbolise religion, time, spirits, threats, money and so on. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

This is an artwork I decided to paint when it became clear that women are taking jabs at me for my shoes. Everyone, except Australians (with Australian backgrounds) know that Australians dress poorly. My background is Bulgarian and Bulgarians dress well. I subconsciously did what my ancestors do and dress well, despite not being raised in the country, as I grow older that involves heels. Australian women even go so far as to say to my face “It’s not normal, you’re being weird” specifically speaking about the fact that my outfit that day had been complimented with heels. It’s essentially racism without realising there’s a cultural difference going on here. I question why my shoes bother these women so much to have to insult me, so I painted them, and one day they will hang on someones wall with pride. As I painted this artwork I learnt that Mars also removed the heels off the green m&m, so I painted it under mine. This artwork is one of my hand-stretched ones, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

I decided to paint a self portrait since I happen to be whipping them out every few years, this time I didn't paint it as a mid-shot front on artwork but a reflection of how I've spent my 20's. Painting until I drop at the easel. Painting the look of gold (without using gold) is a challenge I've been working on lately and my home is gold themed so I tackled that in this painting as well, turning the furniture gold. I still don't think I've figured it out so I guess it's also a reflection of how much progress I'd made with gold by this age. This artwork is hand-stretched, hooks will be attached on sale and sold with a certificate of authenticity.

After purchasing a speaker it looked like a canvas so I popped a painting on it, I like to use pink in my music paintings because pink is the colour of a high pitched sound for me, the flamingo dances it's way through the speaker and turns up the sound while the knob drips down some music to create a glass pear. The flamingo then reappears at the front to what I like to think of the spots as the next song. The material is much thicker than canvas and more difficult to paint on so I currently have no plans to do that again. The priming involved some gesso (as it should!) so the sound turned out muffled so I've taken it off as it's own artwork and repurposed an old frame. Note that I'm not a professional frame maker... Sold with s certificate of authenticity and hooks ready to hang.

I began painting this painting with the idea that I'd paint a table of terrible food, burnt and undercooked food. Although as I made the background I'd realised that I can't have the foreground detailed as well as the background so the painting ended up taking a path parallel to most of my cooking ventures; I start off with an idea and then it derails. I'm quite happy with how the painting ended up (unlike my meals) and decided the front is a vague result, coining the term (yep I'm coining it) geometric surrealism. The painting’s original idea came from a weird situation I find myself in. I'm lactose and gluten intolerant and sugar doesn't sit well so people like to take shortcuts when inviting me for food and end up poisoning me (testing my diet, specifically people skeptical of gluten intolerance) so I'm left with the only alternative to invite them over for bad food instead. Recently I started reading books (instead of articles), I figured the amount of effort it takes to whip up an article has become almost benign and isn't as factual as they used to be so I read some books. The first one was a motivational book (so I'd be motivated to read more books) and not long after I found myself trying to read all the books instantly, I needed to finish them all. So I decided to create a painting about that. The woman in this painting wears an old style dress (because books are an old resource) and is covered by books, floating in a room. I painted the roof a leopard print drooping down and the floor large leaves or grass. Each of the roof and floor interact with the woman as if they're books and she's absorbing the knowledge. The woman is shown to shoot out clouds out the window which, for me, is what she gives back. Oil based, sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity!

I can't say I'm a fan of nostalgia and especially not a fan of people who reach out from a place of nostalgia, it makes me uncomfortable. One main reason for experiencing nostalgia is the brains coping mechanism, if you're feeling down, the brain will likely bring up nostalgic memories to cope. So I feel like it's a big red flag when people pop up out of no where, I'm not sure about other people although it happens about every 3 months for me so I made a painting about being on the receiving end. The left side of the painting is me and a very realistic colour scheme, I have a home with some pretty cool curtains and a few cow hides so I made a funkier version. Teal is also my favourite colour. I painted the cut cord of a phone one my end of the painting and a skeleton reaching out holding a phone on the other side. Bubbles floating in the air because I feel like bubbles are enjoyable to have around and I'm having a good time. On the right side of the painting there are some coloured skeletons, if you watch the recording of the painting you'll see I played around with grey skeletons covered in flowers and decided against it. Coloured, somewhat like plastic dolls. I decided to paint the lighting on this side as if you're looking through a rainbow, party lighting. These people tend to enter my life with no warning and barging in disturbing whatever I have going on as if they're a fun gift for me, only to realise I'm a mask for whatever issues they have going on ready to suck me in. The skeletons are holding onto each-other because it feels like once you let one in, a million others follow. Depending on how you look at the pink skeleton in the centre, it's either looking directly at you or at the ground. Sold with hooks ready to hang, hand stretched and a certificate of authenticity!

I decided to paint my feelings on décor art. The walls are cactus spikes, like some of my best paintings, at the bottom I painted a man hanging a frame (the décor art.......) as if he's framing the wall and at the top I painted a nod to renaissance art where you can see roof arches and biblical characters in them. Jesus is on the right, dead and holding up two fingers as his coat melts and flies away in the form of little birds. On the right you can see a man ready to jump the wall (for a fihgt), being held back by another and a woman watching over, hiding. I used to have dreams of tidal waves, people like to jump to conclusions and say that's anxiety.. I reckon sometimes dreams are just dreams, especially if you remember them all you're bound to have some that aren't boring. I found these dreams pretty cool because as time went on I learnt how to dream-swim and beat the tidal wave. Then when I figured it out the dreams changed. The last one I climbed up on top of a building and the water settled around all the buildings into a flood, so this is that. I wanted to paint the sky so that it blends in with the water, like an actual dream you cant tell what's what. I decided not to paint the top of the head because there's no thinking in dreams. Someone I know threw a little disrespect my way to get ahead and to be frank it made me feel a bit shitty for a day and a bit, I feel like I've usually got my mood in check so I thought this would be a prime opportunity to paint how I felt! Especially (astrology term) since my MC is in the sign of Cancer (an emotional sign) which explain to me that if I tap into emotion then my career would do better as opposed to if I didn't. I chose to put waves of lighter shades in the sky because things seemed a bit dizzy, I painted a large window/ doorway because it seemed cold, a bit drafty, rough grounds and floppy arms. Emotional pain causes the same brain response to physical so I guess thats why my arms felt down as well. The black dots, tears. This painting is the shape of a woman reflecting the surroundings and floating in a landscape. I chose to call this painting “Meek” because I often find myself meeting women without any passion or even hobbies, living their lives reflecting their surroundings doing what others expect of them... coasting by. I find it astounding that the majority's only “goal” is to get married, nothing more. Something you can only really bring back to the nature vs nurture debate and gender role. As I grew older though I understand the importance of gender roles but it’s interesting when they take over from the other parts of life. I created this painting based on a digital artwork I created a few weeks prior which was incredibly well received. Knowing that from the past when I paint a digital artwork it doesn’t quite measure up, so this time I painted a different angle and with a new style using harsher gradients which I think made it unique. I call it “Traveller” because when I first looked at it after I'd painted the people in I saw a journey, like one where you travel over seas and other countries look, feel and smell as foreign as a pineapple blowing up to a hot air balloon. Floating on a crossing as if the visit is a dream. Whenever I explain how Bulgaria is to Australians I don't think they ever fully understand how different it is unless they experience going there. I am a fan of this one! This artwork stands out to me when I think back at past favourites. It took a while to sell but I’m not surprised it did. I had a couple challenges for this artwork, the first being painting a woman. I can paint portraits but under some conditions it’s trickier. It also takes a few paintings to get it right as humans are really perceptive to bad imitations. First I wanted to just include hair and get that right but in my style, then the hand and a cup. From there I also wanted to create a playful artwork where we bypass the processes from fruit to juice and just have the tree on tap. So here you go, this is the result. Sometimes when I create a digital artwork I create many versions or save a version before changing it and in some cases I can’t decided which one I want to sell. Usually I’ll just throw any suitable version up because after a few years of sales I see that my taste isn’t everyone’s taste and the art lovers often choose artworks I would have never guessed. When creating this artwork I wanted to use my black an white portrait photo but mix it with the challenge of turning it gold, digitally and also add a painting in it as well. I guess I went in loaded wth ideas for this one and I’m not sure I hit the mark! These are the results. Definitely funky.

Sometimes you follow advice from people who aren’t artists and have no idea what they’re advising but they’re older than you so you give it a go. I’ve learnt my lesson. The advice? “Paint it again it was so good!, Make more.” I’m not a decor artist and that’s what’s great about a painting, you don’t do it again. I took the advice and twisted it a bit however that stripped the artwork of its concept. You’ll see a few where I painted close ups. I wanted them to be a set with the original, ‘Self Portrait’ but that doesn’t really stand up in reality. Someone buys the artwork because they want that, if they were into decor art they wouldn’t be buying my artwork. So this one and the other close up didn’t follow the main man but I wanted to try and show that there could be a whole new world in the artwork if you’d zoomed in. Kind of like those vector artwork videos where people start off with a scene then create one around t and so on then record the zoom out for the clicks. After seeing how my ‘Biggie Coffee River’ digital artwork turned out, where I incorporated a painting into the water of a photo. I wanted to try again with another painting, I don’t think I hit the mark with this one but it’s interesting to see how it played out.

Every now and then, as an artist, the institutions ask you to create a self portrait as an assignment. At this point in time I didn’t have any in digital format so I took a photo and edited it with the background being the pattern of a kimono I’d wear, sometimes when making art and the sunnies reflecting places I’ve adventured to photograph. I ended up using this as my online display picture for many of my art profiles and also recreated it with paint, a challenge I often return to.

This is a photo I took because I needed a portrait for a gallery, I had a ladder around and there you go. That’s now the portrait I used for some of my online profiles.

Every now and then it’s time to paint a self portrait, the self portraits before this one were assignments so I decided it’s time to create one without an institution requiring it. This time with more creative free reign, the background is the print of a kimono I wear sometimes when making art, the sunnies have digital artworks from landscape photo’s I’ve taken and the portrait part is based on a photo I took. This artwork is oil based, isn’t one of my hand-stretched ones and sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.

A painting of a woman I created in 2018 as part of my 10 paintings in 10 weeks. Check out my instagram story to see prints or other paintings on the story @miss_vanessaness. Oil Based, signed and ready to hang. Weight is a rough guess and the weight of a canvas, the painting also will not be sold framed.

Earlier on in my career I thought that competitions were the way to go and this artwork was one of the first ones I created for an entry. I later on used this artwork in a digital artwork to stretch my creativity and see what I can do with it. This artwork isn’t one of my hand-stretched ones and sold with hooks ready to hang and a certificate of authenticity.
